Wii is a Nintendo video game console for home use, released in late 2006. It is outselling its main competitors, both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. A total of over 52 million copies have been sold as of summer 2009.

Nintendo Wii is based on a new form of player interaction, the idea was to focus on the player and gameplay rather than building the most powerful console.

The most popular and best selling game is Wii Sports Resort It’s a Sport simulations game featuring five different sports such as tennis, golf, bowling, boxing and baseball. To Play you use the Wii remote in a similar way you would if you played these sports in real life. Swinging or putting with a golf club for example.

This console was originally intended to be named Revolution, but was changed to Wii as it sounds like “we” and the two ii in Wii are meant to represent two people standing next to each other playing the game.

“Wii sounds like ‘we’ which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii”

“Revolution as a name is not ideal, it’s long, and in some cultures, it’s hard to pronounce. So we wanted something that was short, to the point, easy to pronounce, and distinctive. That’s how ‘Wii’ as a console name, was created”

With Wii, Nintendos intent was to get a wider range of players, targeting more age groups than previously.

“We are not thinking about fighting Sony, but about how many people we can get to play games. The thing we’re thinking about most is not portable systems, consoles, and so forth, but that we want to get new people playing games”
